Update on legality locks

(August 8, 2000) So what about trigger locks? Starting in October a mechanical gun lock must transfer with every handgun, a new mandate from Glendening's omnibus package about which we have written so much. But a few short weeks ago in Northern Virginia, a young boy died in a tragic accident involving a trigger-locked handgun. It seems his parents, apparently believing the hype about trigger locks, relied on the lock instead of the tried and true methods we in the gun community promote for ensuring safety. Not long after that, ABC news broadcast an in-depth report on safety problems that are created by trigger locks. All of this is exactly as gunowners warned in testimony during session.

Now Master Lock has recalled 752,000 gun locks, after discovered that they can be easily opened by children and others without a key. All are marked "Do not use on a loaded gun!" That warning never stopped control-mongers from parading out police to demonstrate how quickly a trained puppet can remove the lock as if to make it ready for personal protection in the home. Their shows ensure the average viewer will believe trigger locks are what to use in a defense gun. Many recalled Master locks were packaged with Smith & Wesson handguns. You know, the 'safe gun' maker that Glendening praised for helping pass his legislation.

This is only the beginning. External locks are this year's mandate. Glendening's new law says all these problems must be built into each handgun by 2002. No other new handguns will be legal. How many innocent people must die because Parris Glendening, Mike Miller and Casper Taylor wanted a photo op with Bill Clinton?
